In Search Of…

My name is Nysie Watson and I have been a practicing herbalist for 20 years now. I think of myself as an off the grid small batch herbalist. I came upon my herbal path rather late in life. At the age of 40 I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. I was misdiagnosed for 4 months before insisting that the pea size lump I had found in my arm pit (now the size of a tangerine) was not a hormonal cyst.

After finally being taken serious, an ultra-sound was performed; it confirmed my fears that it was indeed cancer. Within 2 days I underwent the lymphectomy to remove the lymph node. Upon awakening from that surgery I came to with the surgeon holding my hand looking so sad. Although it still had to be biopsied he assured me it was cancerous. I told him (quite groggily), “Not to look so sad, I was going to kick cancers butt!” From the get go I had a POSITIVE attitude and was ready to start the fight of my life.

The reality was I had 6 months of very harsh chemo ahead of me. I knew I could beat the cancer but was scared to death it would be the chemotherapy that would kill me. I was very fortunate to have an Oncologist who embraced alternative medicine as long as it did not interfere with his allopathic approach. I was given a 40% chance of survival. Thus my search began. I was determined to do everything in my power to beat this insidious disease.

The first alternative herbal formula I learned about was ESSIAC. This consist of 4 herbs, Burdock, Sheep Sorrel, Turkey Rhubarb, and Slippery Elm. Four simple herbs, but put together, one of the best anti-carcinogen herbal formulas available. Not only does it have its own cancer fighting abilities, but it would also flush out the chemo from other organs. Thus limiting the damage chemo can do to bladder, kidneys, liver, etc; while not interfering with the job chemo was there to do, kill and eradicate the fast producing cancer cells.

After 10 years of yearly testing I was pronounced cured. During that 10 year period I focused on herbs to clear all chemo residue from my system. Chickweed, golden rod and parsley root just to mention a few, all containing saponins to help scrub my blood cells clean. To this day, I do an overnight infusion of stinging nettle. It contains every vitamin, mineral, amino acid and protein building blocks our bodies need. No multi vitamin or supplement for me.  Before that last blood test I made a pact with the Universe, if I was indeed clear I would spend the rest of my life spreading the herbal word.

That was 21 years ago. I keep pictures of that mooned faced, bald headed woman with a port in her chest and a gone look in her eyes. The pictures are to remind me to embrace every day the extra life I was granted. I was still bald headed when I found and started my first herbal studies course at The Herb Corner and Learning Center in Melbourne, Fl.  After 6 months of classes,  I received my certification. Started reading voraciously,  checking on other correspondence classes and travelling the US to attend events, ranging from the American Herbalist Guild’s to Rosemary Gladstar’s International Herbal Symposiums.

I am much honored to have been asked to be a contributor to Conscious Shift’s alternative medicine page. In future months I will share articles ranging from herbal formulas to focusing on individual herbs. I will discuss what illness’s respond well to herbal protocol and have herbal information on pet care as well.

Keep it simple and keep it natural

Herbally Yours,

Nysie Watson
