The Subconscious Mind Lives Beneath the Surface

If you’re like me when I started my spiritual walk, you might answer the following question like this:

“What is the subconscious mind?  On yeah, that.  You know, it’s that part of you that…well…uhhh.  OK, you know when you…ahhhh…I mean, it’s kind of like that thing that…Oh…forget it!  Who cares?!?”

The Subconscious Mind?  They never taught me anything about that in school.  Bummer, because it runs just about everything.

The subconscious mind underlies our conscious minds.  While we are busy in life, deeply engrossed in our 3D day-to-day, it quietly lurks beneath the surface.

It’s the secret home of the non-physical realms of our human experience.  There’s all sorts of mystical stuff in there like our dreams, ideas, imagination and, most importantly, our emotions (yikes!).

Emotions are born to be experienced.  When they are, they dissolve into the cosmos.  Their life cycle has been completed.  When they aren’t, they end up like little critters living inside of us.  Then they make all sorts of trouble by creating repeating patterns of the same problems over and over again.  You know—health, finances and relationships.

Not long ago I moved into a new apartment.  Before moving in, I let the landlord know I had a couple of canoes.  “No problem”, he said, “just throw them behind the shed.”   When I checked it out, I noticed there were already a couple of old kayaks back there.  They were in pretty sad shape.  Both were partially hidden by weeds and exposure to the elements had taken its toll.   They hadn’t been used for some time.

Without asking, I cleared the weeds and moved his kayaks to the more visible side of the shed.  I put my canoes in the more secure storage spot where the kayaks used to be.

A couple of days later, I noticed one of the kayaks was missing.  When I moved it, somebody saw it and ripped it off.  I felt incredibly guilty.  I shouldn’t have moved those kayaks.  I even went to the trouble of moving the remaining kayak back to where it was.

My mind started going crazy.  Should I tell the landlord?  He never used them anyway.  He didn’t even bother to lock them up.  Is he going to want me to pay for it?  I decided to do nothing.  The ramblings in my head grew stronger and crazier for about a week.

While all this madness was going on inside my head, I realized I had some very strong emotions coming up from the past.  I felt like I was in trouble for something I had done wrong.  This scenario had been repeating throughout my entire life with spouses, employers, teachers, coaches.  It obviously started with my dad and was subconsciously projected onto every authority figure I ever encountered.  Even my landlord!  I eventually found out my landlord’s visiting nephew used the kayak.

At that point, I had had enough.  It really bugged me.  But what to do?

There’s a few ways, but the easiest and most effective is a form of active meditation.  The beauty of meditation is that suppressed emotion from the past can be released when you’re deeply relaxed.  There’s not much to it, but it does take a little practice.

When a strong emotion from the past comes up, simply sit and relax, and gently focus your attention on the sensation.  Notice where you feel it in your body.  Within a few moments, it should start to move and release.  For me, it moves up and usually out through my left shoulder.

That’s it!  If it comes back, just do it again.  Eventually, the emotion will be gone, along with the nasty repeating patterns that accompany them.

Furthermore, when past emotions get cleared out from the subconscious, the channels are opened to connect with your Creator.  That’s when the magical dance of spirituality takes it up a notch, for a mystical journey that can last an eternity.

Give it a try; it sure worked for me.  Canoeing is more fun than it’s ever been.
