Tools for Mental Success

When we set our minds to change our bodies through physical activity, the initial intention is a strong driving force.  The intention may last for a few weeks, months or perhaps longer.  What happens next when the intention dissipates and the focus is lost?  Is there a way to activate the desire again?  Absolutely, but it must be willed into action again and kept alive by a strong mind.  Anyone can break the cycle of their own self sabotage.  Take a look over these questions and decide if they are of interest.

Tiffany Doorbal is a sponsored, provincial level bikini/figure/fitness model and athlete who has been in the industry for 8 years.  She is fitness, nutrition and mind-full enthusiast whose drive is to support a balanced physical and mental lifestyle.

The information provided pertains to the mental and emotional preparation that activates the driving force.  When things get tough, the mind must push through and shatter the defeating thought process so it can build a better one to rely on.  Keep in mind that the information provided pertains to competition preparation.  The mental and emotional tools provided can be used in any area of your life that can benefit from a little rewiring.  We were blessed with an imagination to help us through anything that life throws our way!  I guarantee that if you set your mind to accomplish your vision, you can get there, but it takes will and consistency.  Not everyone is this detailed, but figure out what works for you and expect that it will manifest, for you are worth the investment!

Visual Preparation related to Focus, Goals, and Results:

I personally believe the mind connecting to the success of goals.  Our mind is a very powerful tool and leads a lot of our perceptions, in which we can exert energy into practice. When I am prepping for competition, there are a few things I do to keep myself focused and in the zone.

  • · SMART goals – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time-Bound
    • I write down goals and actions so that I can see what I want to achieve
    • I associate scheduled timings in my day and durations of time to ensure that I complete everything, while leaving room for relaxation and rejuvenation so that I do not cause a “burnout”
  • · I use VISUAL IMAGES as a constant reminder of what I am trying to achieve
    • Wallpapers on my computer with focused quotes
    • Display of my awards and trophies at home that I have achieved to show I am capable of making things happen (positive reinforcement to believe in myself)
    • I read every morning when I wake up and every night before I go to bed positive short quotes that I can memorize and repeat to myself when I am feeling tired, hungry, etc.  This automatically takes my mind out of that direction and gives it an instant boost of motivating energy, thus allowing me to put these actions into full force.
    • I watch motivational speeches from great coaches to their athletes.

 

  • · MUSIC – I listen to the lyrics that drive me based on past experiences and what I visualize in future

 

  • · “The stage NOW” – I visualize what I am going to look like on stage and see myself winning (during my training sessions and especially during cardio).   When I am doing sprints and I am pushing through the last few, I visualize doing them because they will “rip up my legs” and it gives me a surge of energy to pump out more of myself.  When I am doing weights, and doing the last few reps – I visualize a tough situation that I experienced in my life and was able to endure which relates to me giving all the energy I have to pump out just a few more strong reps.

 

  • · TUNE OUT MY ENVIRONMENT
    • When I am training, I do not worry about people around me.  I focus on self-improvement and not on what others are doing.
    • I do not ask others what their nutrition plan is, what their training plan is like, or focus on other people’s regiments.  Each person’s journey is different, so I embrace the one I am taking and focus on what I personally need to do to improve and attain the success I have laid out for myself.
    • Solitude – I spend a lot of time by myself during the week: Working full time, training, and a few hours at home with my dogs.  Keeps me focused.

 

  • · FAMILY AND FRIEND TIME
    • It is important for me have a healthy mind and physical balance with everyday life.  I embark on living normally through prep by spending time with family and friends, which helps me to focus.  I find that if I am engaged in only thinking about training and nutrition, then there is a part of me that suffers from the simple joys of life that are most important to me.  I meet weekly on Sunday rest days with family and friends and take time to separate my mind from prep and like to hear about my family and friends’ lives as well.
    • I reach out to friends daily to see how they are doing to show my invested interest in their life as I don’t believe in being self-absorbed and self-focused during prep. It also gives me a mental focus and makes me happy to see my friends and family feeling and doing well.

 

  • · A COMPLETED DAY OR WEEK
    • I always give my mind time to review successes, areas I need to improve, etc. It is important for me to reward myself when I complete things the way I set out to.  I also review areas I can improve in case I need to change anything in my process to attain greater success.
