As children are getting ready to go back to school, I am always saddened to see how much emphasis and money is spent on the fluff, while the most fundamental necessities are absolutely and completely ignored by almost everyone. For example, parents will spend a lot of money on their children’s toys, get them the latest and coolest outfits, and of course, the absolute must-have gadgets, along with all the “necessary” chargers and accessories. Can anyone tell me why a 9-year-old “needs” a cell phone?
So, parents get their kids the best of the best, I get it. Yet, when it comes to food and providing their children with the absolute most fundamental necessities for their health and their life, (meaning healthy foods that will help them grow into well balanced adults), everyone is all of a sudden acting as if their children no longer deserve the best. They purchase items full of chemicals and empty of nutrients, leaving children unable to study, concentrate, sleep or behave like we expect them to. School lunches funded by the state are so disgusting and empty of nutrition, that it is erroneous to categorize them as food.
There is a clear and indisputable connection between our health, how we feel, how we look and what we eat. Put simply: if you eat like garbage, you are going to feel like garbage. When you give a child something to eat and it contains chemicals, you are not feeding the child, you are poisoning the child.
It is conservatively estimated that 3-5% of the school-age population has attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Children with ADHD have problems paying attention, listening to instructions, and completing tasks; they also fidget and squirm, are hyperactive, blurt out answers, and interrupt others.
Although drugs such as Ritalin, are frequently used to treat ADHD, they are fraught with complications. Disadvantages include possible side effects including decreased appetite and growth, insomnia, increased irritability, and rebound hyperactivity when the drug wears off. It is estimated that 15 million kids are on antidepressants or Ritalin: these drugs have never been tested for safety on children: this is one huge nightmarish experiment. If you take Paxil you are up to 8 times more likely to kill yourself or another person. If you take Prozac, you are 12 times more likely to kill yourself or another person.
Chemicals In Your Food
One of the first things I teach my clients is this: Food is NOT the enemy. Chemicals added to the food as well as nutrients stripped from the food are the enemies. I take them to the grocery store of their choice where I teach them how to read food labels, and how to stay away from poisons. So, what should you do and how do you know if what you are buying contains chemicals?
First and foremost, you must read the food labels, and more specifically, the ingredients list on that label. Here are the top killers (chemicals) added to American foods today that you must avoid like the plague, these are poisons:
- Enriched or bleached flour
- High fructose corn syrup
- Partially / fully hydrogenated oil
- Artificial flavors / colors, a.k.a. red 40, blue 1, yellow 5, yellow 6, BHT. These are cancer in a box / bottle!
- If there is any word you do not recognize, chances are your body won’t recognize it as food either! Don’t buy, don’t eat, period.
We are the most overfed, yet undernourished developed nation in the world. We are what we eat, so choose wisely.
